Sushant Singh Rajput was born on 21 January 1986 in Patna, Bihar. He completed his schooling in Patna before moving to Delhi for higher education. An academically gifted student, he secured admission to the Delhi College of Engineering (now Delhi Technological University) to pursue Mechanical Engineering. During his college years, he developed a strong passion for dance and acting, eventually leaving engineering to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Sushant began his acting career in television with the serial Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil and gained nationwide recognition through the popular television show Pavitra Rishta. His successful transition to Bollywood came with the film Kai Po Che! (2013), followed by acclaimed performances in films such as M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Chhichhore, and Dil Bechara. He was widely admired for his interest in science, astronomy, artificial intelligence, and space exploration, making him one of the most intellectually curious personalities in the Indian film industry.

On the morning of 14 June 2020, Sushant Singh Rajput was found unresponsive in his apartment located in Bandra, Mumbai. Emergency services were informed, and local police reached the residence to secure the scene and initiate preliminary proceedings. The body was subsequently sent for a medico-legal post-mortem examination at Cooper Hospital in accordance with standard investigative procedures.

Initially, the Mumbai Police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) under the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure and commenced an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators examined the scene, recorded statements from family members, domestic staff, friends, medical professionals, and individuals associated with the actor’s personal and professional life. They also collected physical and digital evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events preceding the incident.

As public interest in the case increased, the investigation expanded beyond the initial inquiry. Following legal proceedings before the Supreme Court of India, the investigation into the criminal allegations was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Parallel investigations were also conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning financial transactions and by the Narcotics Control Bureau> (NCB) regarding alleged narcotics-related aspects that emerged during the course of the investigation.

Recognizing the need for an independent medical assessment, the CBI sought the opinion of a multidisciplinary forensic medical board from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The board reviewed the available post-mortem records, medical documentation, crime scene photographs, and other relevant material provided to the investigators. This review formed part of the broader scientific evaluation undertaken during the investigation.

The case remained under investigation for several years and became one of the most extensively discussed forensic investigations in India. It highlighted the importance of scientific evidence, objective analysis, and multidisciplinary collaboration in complex death investigations. It also demonstrated the challenges faced by investigators in balancing scientific inquiry with intense public scrutiny and widespread media coverage.

From a forensic science perspective, the Sushant Singh Rajput case is studied as an example of how crime scene investigation, forensic pathology, toxicology, digital forensics, and evidence correlation contribute to determining the cause and manner of death. It reinforces the principle that forensic conclusions must be based on verifiable evidence, validated scientific methods, and expert interpretation rather than speculation or public opinion.
