In a landmark move to protect national security, user privacy, and digital sovereignty, the Government of India banned 59 Chinese mobile applications in June 2020 under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The decision came amid rising geopolitical tensions and growing concerns about data misuse and threats to national security. This digital crackdown marked a significant shift in India’s cybersecurity strategy, targeting apps that were allegedly collecting sensitive user data and transmitting it to servers outside India without adequate safeguards.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated that the apps were “engaged in activities prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, security of state, and public order.”
Key reasons behind the ban include:
Data Privacy Concerns: Many apps were accused of harvesting excessive user data without consent.
National Security Risks: Data transfers to foreign servers raised fears of misuse by foreign entities.
Cybersecurity Threats: Several apps reportedly contained vulnerabilities that could compromise device and network security.
Digital Sovereignty: India aimed to reduce dependency on foreign technology and encourage homegrown alternatives under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
